I obtained my MD from Pahlavi University in Iran and then came to the United Kingdom in July 1969 to study for a specialism. I started in St Thomas Hospital as an SHO in Geriatric Medicine from November 1969 to April 1970 and then changed to psychiatry and worked as an SHO and then Registrar in Adult Psychiatry and Rehabilitation at Dela Pole Hospital in Hull for 13 months (September 1970 to October 1971). I then became a Psychiatric Registrar to Dr William Sargent at Belmont Hospital for 13 months (October 1971 to November 1972), then became Substantive Senior Registrar at St Thomas Hospital for 11 months (November 1972 to September 1973).

I then worked as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the National University of Iran (October 1973 to October 1976), then Associate Professor of Psychiatry (October 1976 to 1979) and then Professor of Psychiatry and Head of Department of Psychological Medicine in October 1980 and remained in that job until July 1993 when I again moved back to the UK.

After arriving back in the UK I became Consultant Rehabilitation Psychiatrist, running Designated National Demonstration Centre in Psychiatric Rehabilitation in East Surrey Priority Trust (July 1993 to May 1995). I then ran the Adult General Psychiatry and Substance Misuse department in the same Trust (May 1995 to September 1995), then became Consultant in Adult Psychiatry covering the Chiswick catchment area and also Consultant in Rehabilitation Psychiatry for the whole Trust based at West Middlesex University Hospital (September 1995 to April 2000). I then joined the Berkshire Healthcare NHS Trust as General Psychiatrist for the North West Sector of Reading with a population of 65,000 and then became Consultant Community Psychiatrist for the North of Reading with a population of 110,000. I finally retired from the NHS on 19th December 2009.
