Professional Profile:
Dr Atkins qualified from Trinity College, Dublin, and was fully registered with the General Medical Council in 1969. A Mental Health Foundation Scholarship allowed him to progress his interests from paediatrics and child development to psychological medicine under the guidance of Professor Sir Martin Roth, President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. At Newcastle University Dr Atkins was Lecturer/Senior Registrar. He furthered his training at the Maudsley in London.
After 25 years as a Consultant in the NHS he is now in full-time private practice despite distractions of rugby, Test matches and opera.
